Finfo Software Development, which was part of the Finfo group of companies, was approached in 1994 by Roedean School in Parktown, Johannesburg to do research with regards to a library automation and management software package. Amongst the main criteria were - that the software conforms to industry standard technology (at that stage, Microsoft® Windows 95), meet a vast range of needs from a library side, and be affordable.
Finfo Software Development was unable to recommend any single product available on the market at that time. Roedean then commissioned Finfo Software Development to write them the necessary software, which became the then Libwin 1. In 1995, Libwin 1 went public, and from the beginning, was installed in schools, colleges and corporate libraries in a multitude of different countries.
In 1996, it was decided to incorporate a separate company from Finfo Software Development, whose sole aim was to develop, market and support Libwin - this company, founded in March 1996, became the continued owners of Libwin - Libwin Library Systems CC
The continuous development of Libwin resulted in two more releases - the first released in 1997 - Libwin 1997, and the second released in early 1999 - Libwin 2000.
In August 1999, Libwin Library Systems CC broke away from the Finfo group when the group of companies was sold to a South African listed company, and became a self-sufficient entity.
Libwin Library Systems CC is currently in the process of rolling out the latest version of its latest flagship product - Libwin 2002 into its user base of over 300 school, college, corporate and specialised libraries throughout the world. |
